Let’s start with the basics. You know how we use money every day, like coins and paper bills? Well, cryptocurrency is a type of money too, but it’s a special kind of digital money. That means it exists only on computers and the internet, not in physical forms like coins or paper bills.

Why is it called cryptocurrency?

The word “cryptocurrency” comes from two parts: “crypto” and “currency.” “Crypto” comes from the word “cryptography,” which is a way to keep information secret and safe. The “currency” part means money. So, cryptocurrency is digital money that’s kept safe and secure using special codes.

How does cryptocurrency work?

Imagine you want to buy a toy online. Usually, you’d use a debit or credit card to pay. With cryptocurrency, you could use digital money instead. You’d send the amount you owe in cryptocurrency from your digital wallet to the seller's digital wallet. A digital wallet is like a bank account, but it holds cryptocurrency instead of regular money.

What’s cool about cryptocurrency?

One really cool thing about cryptocurrency is that it's not controlled by any bank or government. Instead, it’s powered by something called a blockchain. A blockchain is a big online ledger or record book where all cryptocurrency transactions are logged. It’s super secure and hard to hack, which means it keeps everyone’s money safe.

Types of cryptocurrency

There are many types of cryptocurrency, but the most well-known one is called Bitcoin. Other types include Ethereum, Ripple, and Litecoin. Each type has its own special features and ways to be used.
